✅ You are aware of your personal motivations for pursuing music.
What are your motivations for making music? Making a living? Fulfilling a dream? Creating a legacy? Establishing a benefit for others? Do you love the adrenaline rush of performing?
✅ You know your “Why!”
Your “Why” is your purpose. It is the motivation that serves a greater good. It is what motivates and inspires you to take action. It is important to know your purpose because it helps you filter the opportunities that you are presented with.
✅ You have a keen awareness of the career considerations that guide you.
There are several career considerations to be aware of. Being aware of these may help clarify your motivations and in turn, what pursuits you may wish to embark on.
Which suits you better? Being employed by others or do you want to be your own boss? Do you play to entertain others or are your musical endeavours for your own self-expression? Do you seek full-time work or part-time work (there are advantages and disadvantage to both)? Do your aspirations align with your skillset? There are no wrong answers to these questions? What is important is that you are clear of your motivations and honest about what is truly important to you.
✅ You have developed a healthy mindset regarding your musical endeavours.
Do you have a proactive mindset? Do you look for opportunities that you and your music can make a difference? Do you have strategies that enable you to overcome your own mental barriers? Are you able to deal with setbacks and disappointments in a healthy way?
✅ You have written a well-crafted mission statement.
A mission statement tells others what you do and for whom. It helps you identify the benefits you and your music or music service brings to others. It communicates to the community what your professional goals and values are. It helps you attract others in joining your cause.
✅ You have clearly defined written-down career goals.
Having clearly defined career goals narrows your focus. You are 1.2 to 1.4 times more likely to achieve your goals if they are written down. Writing your goals down helps encode information into your brain.
✅ You have a basic understanding of how the music industry works.
Sadly, most classical musicians don’t have a clue how the music industry works. Knowing how to play doesn’t mean you know the music business. The classical guitar world is a very, very, very small part of the music industry. Without having the big picture, it is hard to know how to navigate within the industry or what you should be doing.
✅ You are aware of different opportunities in establishing a portfolio career.
Creating multiple streams of income is critical in establishing a sustainable and fulfilling career. Knowing the different opportunities means you can utilize your strengths as well as development new skills. You can tailor a career that aligns with your interests and skillset.
